The Fat Girl’s Workout Guide: Part I

Ringing in the New Year with the goal to lose weight or workout more? That’s awesome! Making that same resolution each year with no results? Feels disappointing. As someone that’s been there more times than I care to admit, I want to give you some tips. I still have moments where I fall off the wagon, but those moments are few and far between. As I’ve said before, focusing on health and wellness will create better results than solely focusing on the scale. Take your time, and ignore any haters and naysayers.

Workout Tips

  • Find Something You Enjoy: You’re automatically going to fail if you don’t enjoy the workout. For example: I HATE running. People kept telling me it was the best cardio and I would try to force myself to do it. It quickly became easy for me to make excuses to skip the gym because I didn’t want to run. However, once I found something I enjoyed, going to the gym became fun.
  • Ditch the Partner: Partners can make or break the process. Especially if your workout partner isn’t reliable, or they have goals that differ from yours. Don’t let someone’s lack of motivation affect your progress. While it may be intimidating going to the gym alone at first, it does get easier! If you do work better with a partner, find one that already has a routine. That way, their consistency will provide inspiration.
  • Don’t Diet: Diets and diet culture are BS. Diets don’t work because there is always the expectation that it’ll end. You restrict yourself just enough to reach your goal, then gain the weight back because nothing was learned in the process. It’s a terrible cycle. Instead, try to make one lifestyle change at a time. Once that goal is accomplished, move on to the next one. Not only will results from that became visible, but also lessons will be learned regarding nutrition.
  • Treat Yo’self: Find ways to reward yourself that don’t include food. Maybe that means buying a new outfit or shoes when a goal is achieved. Search “workout rewards” on Pinterest for some ideas. A meal may provide momentary satisfaction, but shoes, clothes, etc, can be used multiple times to further your goals!

Happy New Year! I hope 2018 brings success and prosperity.
