Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
I want to start this week’s letter by saying that DC joins millions of Americans across the nation in praying for peace and for the safety of our troops and personnel abroad.
I also want to assure our residents and visitors that, after the events of this past week, there are no credible threats to the District of Columbia. I continue to be briefed by my security team; we are in close contact with our federal and regional partners; and we continue to monitor events at home and abroad. It is also important to remember that as the nation’s capital, our public safety and homeland security officials are constantly planning and training for all threats and hazards.
I also cannot let this moment pass without mentioning a sad truth: that the 705,000 people who call DC home and pay federal taxes continue to have no representation in Congress on votes related to military action. It is an injustice that thousands of DC residents serve in the military, but have zero votes in Congress. In 2020, our nation must fix this.
While we will continue to keep the public informed, residents and visitors can also sign up to receive real-time updates by signing up for alerts at alertdc.dc.gov.
Sincerely,
Muriel Bowser
