Mayor Bowser Kicks Off Immigrant Heritage Month with Community Celebration

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Bowser proclaimed June 2019 as Immigrant Heritage Month, kicking off the month with a community celebration. At the event, Mayor Bowser awarded financial support to several District residents who are going through the naturalization process.

“Washington, DC is a stronger and more vibrant city because of the contributions of thousands of immigrants who live in our community,” said Mayor Bowser. “We’re proud of the investments we’ve made to help residents pursue their dreams of becoming American citizens, ensuring that they and their families will be able to call our city home for generations to come.”

Mayor Bowser announced that the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (MOAA), the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA), and the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs (MOLA), have begun receiving applications for their Fiscal Year 2020 Community Grants.

The application process is open until Monday, July 1, at 5:00 p.m. Each office will host pre-bidder conference sessions on the following dates:

Other events to celebrate 2019 Immigrant Heritage Month include:

Chinatown Community Festival

When: Saturday June 15, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Where: Chinatown Park (555 Eye Street, NW)

What: Come out and experience the tastes, sights, and sounds of Asian & Pacific Islander cultures at the 2019 Chinatown Community Festival! Come enjoy lively performances, cultural demonstrations, fitness demonstrations, food samples, and Asian arts and crafts.

2nd Annual African Community Soccer Game

When: Saturday, June 15, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Where: Columbia Heights Education Campus (3101 16th Street, NW)

What: In partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Metropolitan Police Department, the Mayor’s Office of African Affairs will host its 2nd Annual Washington Community Soccer Game for a fun afternoon of soccer, music, food, and presentations to kick off the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

African Fashion Show and Culture Expo

When: Saturday, June 29, 2019 from 3 pm – 6 pm
Where: Franklin D. Reeves Center of Municipal Affairs (2000 14th Street, NW)

What: As part of its Outreach and Education Program, the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives and the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs, will host an African Fashion Show and Culture Expo to showcase and celebrate DC African fashion, creativity, and culture.

Morning Tai Chi

When: Saturdays in June, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Where: Chinatown Park (555 Eye Street, NW)

What: The DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA) is hosting free Tai Chi classes in Chinatown Park on Saturday mornings in June. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial art. Often described as meditation in motion, Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements and is recognized for many health and wellness benefits.
