For Love of Liberty – The Story of America’s Black Patriots

Maryland Public Television has been re-airing a very informative and important accounting of blacks and their military contributions. The DC Voice is running this series in honor of African American History month. These are but excerpts from that series. Don’t be cheated of the glory of our black patriots and look for the entire series on your local PBS station. The episode I found the most intriguing was that of the World War I Harlem Hell Fighters (369th Infantry Regiment) whose motto was “Don’t Tread On Me, God Damn, Lets Go”

For Love of Liberty For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots, is an inspiring, definitive and unprecedented look at the largely untold history of African-American participation in America’s armed forces, from the earliest days of the Revolutionary War to the current conflict in Afghanistan. Executive produced by Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr., the four-hour documentary will be broadcast on public television beginning February 2010.

Ten years in the making, For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots sets the record straight once and for all. Introduced by General Colin Powell and hosted by Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry, the film uses letters, diaries, speeches, journalistic accounts, historical text and military records to document and acknowledge the sacrifices and accomplishments of African-American service men and women. The film examines why, despite enormous injustice, these heroic men and women fought so valiantly for freedoms they themselves did not enjoy.
